The DeKalb County Rehab & Nursing Center has been in existence since 1853. We are the oldest and largest health care provider in DeKalb County. Beginning as a “Poor Farm”, the facility has evolved over generations to a progressive, skilled nursing center that is highly regarded County-wide for its quality nursing care and for its commitment to improving daily life for seniors with healthcare needs.

In March 2000, we moved to a new 190-bed state-of-the-art building located just north of Northern Illinois University. We are nestled near a designated wetlands area, which allows our residents the pleasure of watching wild waterfowl and an occasional deer.

Our resident rooms have private bathrooms and a maximum 2-person occupancy. A limited number of private rooms are available for residents with special needs. There is ample space for sitting and socializing.

Special needs and admissions

The Social Services Department works closely with residents and family members to ensure a comfortable adjustment to the facility as well as to assist with any issues that may arise during a resident’s stay. We have an open door policy making it easy to access confidential assistance, if desired. Social Services coordinates the admitting and discharge process. We see a resident’s experience at our facility as a very important chapter in each resident’s life and, therefore, we provide assistance in obtaining all the necessary services and equipment needed for a successful stay and return to the community whenever possible.

Activities

We provide our residents with a tremendous variety of activities in order to meet each resident’s interest. The Activity Department plans and schedules events and activities with resident input on a monthly basis. The activities may be in a group setting or on an individual basis.

The Dining Experience

We offer four bright and comfortable dining rooms, some with access to a courtyard. The dining areas are designed to accommodate a variety of needs and abilities; we serve residents in walkers and wheelchairs, and make special arrangements whenever necessary. The dining experience provides socialization as well as balanced nutrition. Residents may choose to entertain guests in our private Family Dining Room.

We serve nutritionally balanced meals, which are planned by a Registered Dietician. The dietary department also schedules a monthly Food Council meeting for residents to voice their ideas. As a result, menus change frequently to reflect resident preferences.

Gathering Places

We have a fully equipped Beauty and Barbershop on site with a full-time Beautician.

Residents and Family members are encouraged to schedule appointments as needed. In addition, we feature courtyards, a gazebo, and patio space where residents can garden or simply enjoy being outside in the warmer months. There are walking tracks inside and outside.
